When players tuned in to see the action of Day 2 of Event 48, the tournament clock said that Event 48 had been running for 24 hours. Technically, that was correct, but there was a solid 14.5-hour break in there after Day 1 ended. A little misleading, but it was true that after 24 hours, there were still 69 players in the tournament and quite a few hours to go before a winner would be declared.
So, Day 2 of the $1,000 + $50 NLHE tournament did begin on Wednesday, September 22, and only 69 players of the original 1,224 were still in contention for the title. A solid portion of the $1,224,000 prize pool was still up for grabs.
The first player to exit on Day 2 was CamoJr, who walked away with $3,060.00 for 69th place. Brock “t soprano” Parker followed in 68th place, and others like recent two-time bracelet winner Jamie “Xaston” Kaplan left the field as well. Interestingly, ImaLuckSac departed in 54th place, and ImaLucSac was next in 53rd, and we’re really not sure what happened there.
But holding down the fort for Team PokerStars was Dennis Phillips, who had just arrived in Argentina for the Latin American Poker Tour Grand Final hours before and got comfortable in front of the laptop for some WCOOP action. He started the day in eighth place on the leaderboard but soon had his aces cracked to lose some ground. According to his Twitter feed, he lost most of his stack when his A-K didn’t work as intended, though he worked his way back up to a 100K stack, then up to 160K to 21st place out of the remaining 45 at that point. Then, “Q 3 just took down a big one. Now 16th out of 37. Guy slow played AA. Lol,” he reported. But another series of hits to his chip stack found him with a need to push, and he did it on the following hand:
That was all we wrote, as Dennis “D. Phillips” Phillips took leave of the tournament in 31st place with $4,528.80.
More than 3.5 hours into Day 2, only two tables remained, and the only players remaining from the previous day’s top five chip leaders were APowers1968 and mrvogt, but the latter ended up working a short stack for several levels and ultimately busted in 11th place. Hand-for-hand play took about 20 minutes, at which point munchenHB pushed all-in with Aâ™ 9♦ but WatchTheSea called with a dominating A♣ J♣ . The board came 5♣ 6♦ A♥ 8â™ 3♦ , and munchenHB was out in tenth place with $11,628.00.
Nearly five hours into Day 2, the final table was set, and it happened just as Level 38 got underway with blinds of 8,000/16,000 and a 2,000 ante. The starting chip counts of the nine players were as follows:
Seat 1: WatchTheSea (883,363 in chips)
Seat 2: vluff (1,431,872 in chips)
Seat 3: AlwaysFelted (1,084,483 in chips)
Seat 4: GripDsNutz (288,952 in chips)

GripDsNutz had a very short stack to start and moved it all-in on the second hand of the final table with A♣ K♠. Original raiser vluff called with 7♠7♥ . The flop of 10♥ 7♣ Q♥ brought straight possibilities for GripDsNutz, but the 6♣ turn and 10♠river that completed the board did not do as much for that straight. Vluff, on the other hand, finished with a full house to eliminate GripDsNutz in ninth place, which was good for a $14,076.00 payday.
Play slowed tremendously through the subsequent levels, with most pots staying small and players getting the most of the generous structure. During the first hour of the final table action, the most notable hand saw Timinator6 double through antesvante.
Another half hour later, short-stacked AlwaysFelted finally pushed all-in for 330,253 chips with K♦ Q♥ , and original raiser USCphildo called with 8♦ 8♥ . The board blanked with 5♣ 3♣ 10♦ A♠6♠, and AlwaysFelted was again denied a WCOOP title. After having finished in third place in Event 22, AlwaysFelted had to accept an eighth place finish here, for which he received $24,480.00.
The very next hand saw more action, as TH@NKS_U made a big all-in push with more than 950K holding Q♠Q♣ , but APowers1968 had no problem calling with A♥ A♣ . The board of 4♥ 9♠9♣ J♣ 5♠obviously brought no queen, and that left TH@NKS_U out of the tournament in seventh place with $36,720.00.
Vluff doubled through APowers1968 to jump into the chip lead, while antesvante doubled through WatchTheSea to stay alive.
WatchTheSea then doubled through USCphildo to stay in the game, but still on the short stack, WatchTheSea pushed again. The hand started with APowers1968 making a raise and WatchTheSea moving all-in for 825,495. Vluff reraised all-in, which prompted a fold from APowers1968. Vluff then showed Q♠Q♥ , and WatchTheSea turned over A♠10♥ . The board produced 9♥ 4♥ 5♣ K♣ 9♦ , and nothing changed the original status. That meant WatchTheSea was thrown overboard in sixth place with $48,960.00.
Soon after, antesvante made a move for just over 1.5 million chips holding A♥ J♥ , and it was vluff who made the call with Q♥ Qâ™ . The board came K♦ 6♦ 3♥ 5♥ Q♣ , and that was all it took to deny antesvante a chance at the title. Antesvante, a former Sunday Million winner and final tablist in WCOOP’s Event 2 went home with $61,200.00 for the fifth place finish.
APowers1968 was having a rough time as the hours passed at the final table. A double-up through vluff kept the dream alive, though.
But USCphildo was the next to move. With less than 1 million chips, he pushed all-in with 9♣ 9â™ from the small blind, and vluff called from the big blind with 5♥ 5♣ . The flop of Q♦ 8♥ 5â™ immediately changed the outlook and gave the advantage to vluff, and the A♣ on the turn and A♥ on the river made a full house. Phil “USCphildo” Collins departed in fourth place with $86,904.00.
The final three players decided to pause the tournament to take a look at possible chop numbers, but when they returned, the shorter stacks were none too happy with what they saw. They quickly agreed to disagree and restart the tournament with no deal in place.
Vluff used a massive chip lead to push around his opponents, and when Timinator6 was ready to take a chance with an all-in move holding A♣ 9♠, vluff was right there with 7♠6♠. But the flop brought 6♣ K♠K♦ to give vluff the pair, and nothing about the 10♣ turn or 8♥ river chanced the outcome. Timinator6 was gone in third place with $116,280.00.
The final two players began their competition with these chip counts:

Seat 8: APowers1968 (1,085,036 in chips)
APowers1968 doubled up on the very first hand of the battle, and a few minutes later, the following hand brought the chip stacks even closer:
APowers1968 became the aggressive one and soon took over the chip lead. At one point, vluff was down to less than 1.4 million, though a double-up gave him a fighting chance. And vluff eventually regained the lead. With vluff holding a bit of a lead over APowers1968 about 50 minutes into the match, the two attempted deal talks, but the two quickly decided not to accept the deal. Play resumed.
After more than two hours of play, APowers1968 got the upper hand through a massive double-up that left vluff with less than 400K. Vluff doubled up once and attempted it again two hands later. It was vluff all-in with A♥ 3♣ and APowers1968 holding 10♥ 9♠. The flop of 2♦ 4♥ 3♠gave vluff the advantage, and the J♣ on the turn supported that. But the 9♥ on the river gave APowers1968 the pair of nines, leaving vluff, who recently finished second in WCOOP Event 5 out in second place with $155,448.00.
APowers1968 won a very tough heads-up battle and came out on top, walking away with $213,955.20 and a gold bracelet for the Event 48 victory.
