LEX VELDHUIS INTERVIEW: “I COULDN’T SLEEP. I JUST LIED IN BED, SMILING.”

After years of near misses, Lex Veldhuis has finally clinched his maiden Championship of Online Poker (COOP) title – and what an event to win.

Veldhuis’ SCOOP victory came in the $5K buyin Titans event (#41-H) where he navigated his way through a 128-entry field comprised of the very best in the world to win $140,279 – one of the biggest prizes awarded in the series so far.

We spoke to the PokerStars Team Pro the morning after about how it feels to have so many top pros watch his stream, what the win means for him, and why it’s relaxing to be “the worst player at the table”.

PokerStars Blog: Congratulations! You’ve had so many seconds and thirds and close calls in COOP events. How did you feel when you went to bed last night…and did it feel like a dream when you woke up?

Lex Veldhuis: Thanks! I’m so happy. It just feels great. I feel as light as a feather.

Streaming a tournament series is so intense and every day you feel like you’re grinding down, mustering up energy, and when you have a bad session you go to bed not feeling good. But now everything just feels light and happy and I’m constantly smiling. I couldn’t sleep — I just lied in bed for an hour and a half smiling.

I had so many nice messages from people and I woke up to so many more. I can’t wait to keep playing, [the rest of SCOOP] feels like such an insane freeroll. It just couldn’t be better.

What does it mean to you to not only win your first COOP but do it in one of the toughest/biggest buy-in tournaments?

It’s almost a triple win. I remember when I got second in a COOP last year — a really small one, an $11 6+ event. I was gutted. I was like, wow. It was only then that I really understood what having a COOP title meant to me, even a small one. They really all count. 

So I would have been super happy to win an $11 SCOOP. But I also got a big prize AND it was against the best competition in the world. I really maxxed out. 

I said on social media that I thought I was the worst player on the final table, and I wasn’t kidding there. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not confident that I can put people in tough spots. That’s the beauty of the game: the best player isn’t always going to win.

It’s kind of relaxing in a way to be five out of nine and think I’m the worst player, so let’s just see what happens. Those guys are sickos. The hands you play against them are so stressful.

You got a lot of love from those sickos and other top players on other tables after the win. What does that recognition mean to you? 

That meant a lot to me, actually. I would join a table and people would say congrats, or “Look at this guy styling in the Fenomeno after winning the Titans”. I was like, wow, there were so many people watching. 

There are different feelings you get from different types of viewers. Some watch while they work. Some watch with their partner. There are all these different angles as to why it’s so cool that people watch.

But when pros watch the stream it means a lot. It means they’re grinding and they have the stream open and it’s something they think enhances their grind. It’s a huge compliment and I love hearing from top regs that they watch the stream. It felt great.

This also puts Team Lex way ahead in SCOOP League…

Yeah, we’re crushing. Shout out to “Blairtoast2 and “shaddisimo” from the community who have a lot of points. Man, my picks have really worked out. Pads is crushing. Adrenalin is absolutely smashing it. I feel so good about my team. 

It’s just fun to watch. They’re all great picks and I hope to do it again for WCOOP.

After a myriad of final tables and podium finishes, Lex Veldhuis finally has his Championship of Online Poker title — and it came in one of the toughest and biggest buy-in events of the series: SCOOP 41-H: $5 200 NLHE [Titans]. The PokerStars Team Pro defeated a 128-entry field made up of the best online players in the game to win $140,279 and the silverware.

ABOUT SCOOP LEAGUE

This could get ugly but, wow, is it going to be fun to rail. 

PokerStars is launching the inaugural SCOOP league in which Team Pros Lex Veldhuis, Benjamin Spragg, Fintan Hand and Parker Talbot will act as team captains, drafting a 30-pick squad for SCOOP.

The 30 picks consist of two aces from the pool of Team Pros, as well as eight poker pros of their choosing. They’ll also get to select 20 hot prospects from their stream communities and each pick will get a $215 SCOOP ticket to take a shot on one of poker’s biggest stages. 

Here’s how you can get involved.

Now that the captains have picked their teams, players can pledge their allegiance to their favourite streamer (or just the one who you think has the best team). You’ll do this by:

• Click the ‘Tools’ tab in the PokerStars Lobby
• Select ‘Star Code’
• Enter the Star Code: SCOOPLeague
• You’ll then receive a freeroll ticket
• Go to ‘My Tournament Tickets’ and you’ll see four separate freerolls — one for each Ambassador
• You can only register for one, so choose wisely

You can register for one of the freerolls anytime until May 20.

When the league is finished, the freeroll of the winning captain will take place and there are big prizes to be won (the other three freerolls will be cancelled).

The freeroll winner will receive a full package to the UKIPT / ESPT Malaga event in June. Plus, there will be $109 Power Path Step 4 tickets up for grabs in consolation prizes.

SCOOP 2024 runs from 5-29 May 2024

SCOOP 2024 is going to be a big one. Quite simply it’s a series you never want to miss.

And today is all about the SCOOP schedule — all 128 events of it — now available to view.

SCOOP will cover all the bases of tournament poker. Multiple poker variants, tournament formats, and three tiers of buy-ins for every event.

No matter your bankroll, experience level, or specialities, there are events for you. Buy-ins start at $2.20.

Below you can get to the good stuff yourself, but here’s the overview.

Let’s start with the biggest number: $75M Guaranteed across the series.

What does that break down into?

In total some 128 tournaments. Each with three versions to suit low, medium and high buy-ins, and a trophy for every single winner. Just as you’ve come to expect.

In all you can expect at least $2M Gtd in prize money every day to 27 May.

But that’s nothing like the whole story.

Within that there are some notable landmarks to chew over. We’ll let you pour over the details, but here are a few highlights.

Starting with the three Main Events in Sunday 26 May.

• $109 Main Event Low ($2M Gtd)
• $1,000 Main Event Medium ($3.5M Gtd)
• $10,000 Main Event High ($5M Gtd)

But there are some other big events to keep in mind in the weeks before.

A $1,050 Sunday High Roller ($1M Gtd) on Sunday 5 May.

Two $1,050 Super Tuesdays on 7 May and 21 May with $500K Gtd.

Three $215 Thursday Thrills each with $600K Gtd.

PLUS, for the first time ever, Mystery Bounty Events. They’ll be 12 in total, with prize pools ranging from $150K Gtd to $500K Gtd and buy-ins starting at $3.30.

And to make playing even easier you can now convert Silver or Gold Passes into SCOOP ticket bundles. Even more reason to get playing Power Path for free every day.

$350K IN ADDED VALUE

PokerStars has announced there are now $350,000 worth of SCOOP 2024 tickets up for grabs via satellites, Fast Track, and Power Path, giving you an even greater chance of playing without breaking the bank.

As if the series needed any more excitement, SCOOP Leader Boards always provide some added drama. Very often, the battle for the top spot on each table goes right down to the wire, keeping us glued to the results until the final few events.

It’s sure to be another thrilling race this year as PokerStars is putting up $100,000 in Leader Board prizes for the Low/Medium/High boards, as well as the overall Player of the Series. This year’s champions will also take home a highly coveted SCOOP trophy!

Last year it was “Fal1st” of Thailand who won the Overall Player of the Series Leader Board — as well as the Low Leader Board — winning $25,000 and $5,000, respectively.

Please Note: players in Germany, Sweden and Belgium are ineligible for Leader Board prizes due to regional regulations.

SCOOP 2024 SCHEDULE

LAST YEAR’S SCOOP (2023)

The 2023 renewal of the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) — its 15th — ran from Sunday, May 7 through Thursday, June 1 and featured 363 tournaments.

Brazil’s Felipe “lipe piv” Boianovsky became the 15th winner of the SCOOP Main Event, taking down the $10,300 buy-in (#108-H) to win $1,036,199 – the largest prize of SCOOP 2023.

“Fal1st” of Thailand won the Overall Player of the Series Leader Board — as well as the Low Leader Board — winning $25,000 and $5,000, respectively. Sweden’s Jerry “perrymejsen” Ödeen topped the Medium Leader Board for $10,000, while Tobias “Senkel92” Leknes came out top in the High for $15,000.
