Home / Poker / Qualifier David Tous benefits from late-night penalty to rocket up EPT Paris chip counts

David Tous has enjoyed what he describes as “a dream start” on Day 4 of the European Poker Tour (EPT) Paris Main Event.

The Spaniard, who lives in Andorra, entered the day with around 800,000 chips. But by the time the first level was done, he’d shot up to ~2.8 million, giving him one of the Main Event’s biggest stacks.

His good fortune began immediately…and ordinarily. He first won a flip with ace-king against pocket queens, then made a thin value bet on the river and got paid.

But it was in part thanks to the missing Eric Afriat that his biggest windfall arrived.

Afriat is now back in his seat, after getting in trouble late on Day 3

Afriat — who also boasts one of the tournament’s biggest stacks — had posted the big blind and ante, but his seat was empty. This was due to a one-orbit penalty he’d received late last night after celebrating cracking aces a bit too aggressively.

His absence meant there was a free big blind and ante up for grabs for the other players at the table. “There was some levelling going on,” David Tous explains, and a pre-flop-raising war escalated between him and another player. Ultimately, there was a pre-flop all-in and Tous’ ace-queen held against their ace-jack to take down a big pot.

BREAK ON THROUGH

The name David Tous might be not familiar to you yet, but he’s well known among the Spanish poker community behind his PokerStars screenname “dvdpourvu”.

The 31-year-old began playing poker around a decade ago when a friend taught him how to play. Since then he’s climbed the stakes and now plays a ~€150 average buy-in.

Tous has enjoyed a dream Day 4 start

“I usually only play online but over the last year, I’ve started to play live because I want to give it a try,” says Tous. “I’m mostly playing PokerStars events because they are what I like and I can qualify online.”

Tous says his live results in 2023 weren’t the best, but you wouldn’t know it from scanning his Hendon Mob. He cashed the inaugural EPT Paris Main Event – finishing 44th for €21,450 – and followed it up a month later with a final table at the Estrellas Madrid Main Event. His fourth-place finish was worth a career-best €45,510.

His next big result came at the France Poker Series (FPS) in Aix en Provence where he finished third in a €550 Deepstack event for €11,000.

Tous agrees that he might be on the verge of a breakthrough live result. “I’ve played several EPT events but last year was my first deep run, and now this is my second,” he says.

Tous is hoping to win the event then get back to his computer

But it’s online where he feels most at home. Even an EPT Paris victory won’t change that.

“If I win, I won’t play any more live,” he says, laughing. “OK, maybe a little, but just for fun!”
