SERIES RESULTS

JANUARY 2 UPDATE

If you’re just returning to the world of poker news after some well-earned time off, allow us to fill you in on all the biggest results from the festive season.

The New Year Series on PokerStars is in full swing with more than 150 events across three buy-in tiers already completed.

Here we’re going to highlight some of the biggest winners of the series so far.

LEX WINS BIG ON CHRISTMAS EVE

The series kicked off on December 24 and while some people (OK, PokerStars Blog) were already busy slipping into food comas, many of poker’s best and brightest were battling at the tables for some early presents.

One was PokerStars Team Pro Lex Veldhuis, who recently travelled to New Zealand with his family – primarily to enjoy the wonders of the Land of the Long White Cloud, but also for its convenient daytime poker schedule.

Success came early for Veldhuis as he took down a $1,050 NLHE PKO event (#04-H) on opening day, winning $12,564 plus $11,656 in bounties. The tournament received 120 entries that were whittled down to a final table that included Audrius “Stakelis24” Stakelis, “neeno1990”, and Ognyan “cocojamb0” Dimov.

In the same session, Veldhuis also finished fifth out of 136 entries in the $530 Sunday Cooldown PKO Turbo (#07-H) for $4,806 total. Dimov placed sixth in that one.

CHRISTMAS DAY / BOXING DAY

It was a very merry Christmas for Roman “RomeOpro” Romanovsky as he bested 94 entries in the $1,050 NLHE PKO (#09-H) on December 25, banking $16,263 plus $18,984 in bounties. To get the job done, Romanovsky defeated Brazil’s Lucio “WizardOffAz” Lima heads-up.

On Boxing Day it was “Jpsalgadocr0” from Brazil who was the biggest winner, earning $39,730 for outlasting 189 entries in the $1,050 Super Tuesday (#16-H). That one had a stellar final table that included Christian “WATnlos” Rudolph (who finished second), and Niklas “Lena900” Astedt (third).

THAT STRANGE PERIOD WHERE YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT DAY IT IS

We’re referring to December 27-30, of course.

Luis “luis_faria” Faria of Brazil emerged victorious on the 27th in a $1,050 buy-in 5-Max event (#24-H), banking $8,474 plus a whopping $20,563 in bounties. From the 105 entries, Stakelis finished runner-up while Bert “girafganger7” Stevens placed fourth.

The $2,100 Thursday Thrill PKO (#30-H) on December 28 was won by Argentina’s “Shark180599”, meaning they not only won the $22,740 up top but also the lion’s share of the bounty prize pool – $28,250. That event saw 113 entries and Vlad “dariepoker” Darie finished second for $22,740 plus $14,250 in bounties.

On the 29th, we saw Sweden’s “Mamamamama70” take down the $1,050 6-Max PKO Turbo (#33-H) for $10,961 plus $13,906 in bounties, while on the 30th Chris “ImDaNuts” Oliver won the $530 buy-in Copacabana Turbo (#47-H) for $17,629, defeating 175 entries.

Stay tuned to this page as we’ll update it with more big results as the series progresses.

Don’t forget about the debut of Mystery Bounty events on PokerStars, which take place on January 7.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Remember when you were little and – if you’d been good – your parents would let you open one Christmas present on Christmas Eve?

Well, you must have been good this year because PokerStars is doing something very similar.

Another exciting edition of the New Year Series has been announced, kicking off on Christmas Eve and running from December 24 to January 16, with a juicy $35 million guaranteed in prizes across the series.

Just like in the Spring and World Championships of Online Poker, the New Year Series will have action for all players with three separate buy-in levels: Low, Medium and High. So whatever your bankroll, there’ll be a game for you.

But what makes this series extra special is the debut of mystery bounty events on PokerStars…

MYSTERY BOUNTY EVENTS

Mystery bounty tournaments provide an extra layer of surprise and suspense to proceedings.

Mystery bounty tournaments won’t be available to players on the following licenses: .BG, .CZ, & .RO.

HOW MYSTERY BOUNTY TOURNAMENTS WORK

The ‘initial stage’ of the mystery bounty tournament works like a regular poker tournament, with no bounties awarded for eliminating opponents.

That all changes in the ‘final stage’, which begins once the money bubble has burst.

Mystery bounties begin once you’re in the money

From then on, players will win mystery bounties when they eliminate a player — just like in a regular progressive knockout tournament. However, the value of the bounty is kept secret and is only unveiled once a player has been eliminated.

The prize pool is split into two equal parts: one half goes into the regular prize pool awarded to those who surpass the money bubble, while the other half is reserved for mystery bounties won each time a player is eliminated.

Multiple mystery bounties can be won with one hand if more than one opponent is knocked out. If a player is eliminated in a chopped hand, all the winning players will split the mystery bounty equally.

Players can monitor which mystery bounty prizes are still available in the ‘Tournament Info’ widget displayed on the table.
