LAPT Punta del Este: The Dawn of a New Day
1 Minute Read
Greetings from the Mantra Casino in the tony La Barra section of Punta del Este. The start time for the LAPT Punta del Este Main Event has been delayed for a few minutes while the staff completes finishing touches on the Main Event. This event is so large that two separate areas inside the Mantra Casino are utilized to accommodate the field.
The usual suspects are slowly making their way inside. The Brenes clan was spotted in the lobby. Humberto, his brother, and his sons will be among the 300 or so runners with their hopes set on becoming the next LAPT Champion.
In 2008, Jose Miguel Espinar bested a field of 351 players for a $241,735. The defending champion is Karl Hevroy from Norway. The young pro, nicknamed “Houdini” by tournament director Mike Ward, collected $283,500 for his victory.
LAPT President David Carrion kicked off the festivities with a brief press conference welcoming the media, players, and causal spectators. Players are heading to their seats as we speak. Cards will be in the air shortly.
Stay tuned for updates.
