Two special European Poker Tour awards have been handed out here in London. They weren’t based on points or money won, but votes alone. They were, unashamedly, popularity contests. One with the poker media that attend and cover EPT events, the other with the players that bought and satellited into tour events.

Here are the definitions of the event from the EPT website.

EPT Achievement of the Year: All EPT Media will be able to vote on their favourite player from a shortlist provided in the voting form.

EPT Players’ Choice of the Year: All EPT players will be able to vote on their favourite player from a shortlist provided in the voting form.

Steve O’Dwyer won the first, largely down to him winning the EPT Grand Final by beating what was perhaps the toughest final table of all time. In fact, the award could be re-named as the ‘Doing an O’Dwyer Award’, but people may get that confused with rewarding limping on the button.

The second result, a victory by Walid Bou Habib, who cashed in four Season 9 Main Events, could easily adopt the unofficial title of the ‘Best Corralling of One’s National Player Base Award’. Bou Habib scored a runner-up finish to Remi Castaignon at EPT Deauville for €475,000.
